Rathmell Named Chief of Enterprise Anesthesiology for Mass General Brigham

James P. Rathmell, MD, has been appointed Chief of Enterprise Anesthesiology for Mass General Brigham, and will lead efforts to set the vision and strategic direction for Enterprise Anesthesiology, starting July 1.

Building on the long history of collaboration among the Mass General Brigham departments of Anesthesiology, Mass General Brigham recently announce the launch of Enterprise Anesthesiology, a new service with a common governance and executive leadership team. The Enterprise Anesthesiology executive leadership team will develop and implement collaborative programs across our two academic medical center departments of anesthesiology—and support integration with our community partners—to deliver anesthesiology services with a single high standard throughout our system.

Rathmell will continue to serve as Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at the Brigham and the Leroy D. Vandam Professor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School. He will maintain the full spectrum of chair responsibilities at the Brigham, including overseeing day-to-day clinical activities for the department while working closely with other members of the executive leadership team to establish and implement clinical integration priorities, advance quality and safety standards, enhance patient care and experience and improve faculty experience for the enterprise service.

Lemaire Appointed Vice President of International and Specialized Services

Karen Lemaire has been named vice president of International and Specialized Services at the Brigham, effective June 1. She served as interim vice president for Strategic Initiatives and Partnerships over the past year, supporting the team’s transition to an enterprise service for our Mass General Brigham system.

In her new role, Lemaire will work to advance all aspects of international and highly personalized patient programs for the Brigham. She will also serve as our executive leader liaison with Mass General Brigham Global Advisory and Destination Services teams.

Within the context of oncology care for international patients, Lemaire will work collaboratively with the leadership of Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center to ensure our joint program operations and service standards align.

Evangelista Named Lead CRNA for Mass General Brigham iCare

Kate Evangelista, DNP, CRNA, NEA-BC, has accepted a new position as lead CRNA for Mass General Brigham Integrated Care (iCare). She is leaving her role as associate chief nursing officer of Perioperative Services at the beginning of July.

Evangelista previously served as chief CRNA for the Brigham and as a CRNA and Cardiac CRNA team leader at Massachusetts General Hospital. As iCare’s lead CRNA, she will provide high-quality clinical care to patients and remain part of the system.

Janet Gorman, MM, BSN, RN, associate chief nursing officer for the Emergency Department and the Float Pool, will provide interim coverage to Perioperative Services.

Negroiu Named Chief of Anesthesia for Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital

Costin Negroiu, MD, has been named chief of Anesthesia at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, effective August 1, 2022.

Negroiu has served as the vice chair and associate clinical director of anesthesia at BWFH for the past nine years. Prior to joining BWFH in 2013, he was a member of the anesthesiology team at UMass Memorial Medical Center.

Negroiu will serve as the key leader for the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine where he’ll be responsible for a broad range of clinical, administrative and strategic efforts at BWFH in collaboration with colleagues from across the Mass General Brigham system.

Fredenburgh to Join Regeneron New York

Laura Fredenburgh, MD, faculty director of the Office for Research Careers and associate professor in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and Harvard Medical School, will be leaving the Brigham in June to pursue a new opportunity as medical director in Early Clinical Development for Regeneron Pharmaceuticals in New York.

Fredenburgh joined the Brigham community in 2001 as a Clinical Fellow with the Harvard Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program. As she advanced to associate professor, she has shown great commitment to mentoring and advising students, postdocs, and junior faculty, both in her own lab and through the Office for Research Careers.

Fredenburgh has led the Office for Research Careers (ORC) as faculty director since 2018, providing funding for junior investigators and advising the Postdoctoral Association. Some of her contributions during this time include establishing an individual grant editorial service with weekly editing slots for junior investigators, expanding the Faculty Career Development Awards for junior investigators from two awards to a total of four awards in 2022, and establishing the Research Staff Excellence Awards (formerly Research Staff Travel Awards) to recognize exceptional research staff who are pursuing a career in research. During the return to onsite work after the COVID-19 research shutdown, Fredenburgh led the ORC in awarding $54,000 to junior investigators in the research community through an Emergency Reagent Replacement Program.

The ORC is soliciting applications for a new faculty director.

Beloff Leaves the Brigham

Jennifer Beloff, RN, MSN, APN, has left the Brigham and her role as vice president of Quality in the Department of Quality and Safety (DQS) to embark on a new phase in her career. Her last day was June 10.

Beloff joined the Brigham in 2008 as a senior consultant in the Center for Clinical Excellence. In 2012, she was promoted to director of Quality Programs and then advanced to vice president of Quality in 2020. Some highlights from her portfolio include our external reporting for Leapfrog and U.S. News & World Report rankings; commercial, state and federal reporting and pay for performance programs; and Domain and Unit-Based Teams infrastructure. Beloff has overseen several teams focusing on our quality reporting, Enhanced Recovery after Surgery Pathways, Clinical Documentation Improvement and Patient Experience.
