Sneak Preview of Discover Brigham 2021
Lindsey Baden, MD, is director of the Center for Clinical Investigation at the Brigham and director of Infectious Diseases at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Baden’s research interests focus on early-stage vaccine development and the development of novel diagnostics and therapeutics for fungal and viral diseases that affect transplant and cancer patients disproportionately. 
Anne Schuchat, MD, is an internist and epidemiologist whose career at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spanned 33 years. She was the agency’s principal deputy director from 2015-2021 and served twice as acting CDC director. From 2006 to 2015, she was the first director of CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), leading the nation’s immunization program through recommendations for several new vaccines and the global deployment of vaccines against pneumonia and meningitis. 
The COVID-19 pandemic forced non-COVID related research to shut down to various degrees around the world, and the Brigham was no exception. Despite these ongoing challenges, our students, postdocs, junior faculty and staff at the Brigham have continued to be productive and innovative in their respective research activities. Jean C. Lee, PhD, is a faculty member at the Brigham whose research is focused on the pathogenesis of infections caused by the bacterial pathogen Staphylococcus aureus. Lee’s recent studies reveal a previously unknown role of S. aureus extracellular vesicles in the activation of human macrophage NLRP3 inflammasomes and highlight the important role of vesicle-associated toxins and lipoproteins in staphylococcal pathogenesis. 
Vikram Khurana, MD, PhD, is chief of the Division of Movement Disorders at the Brigham. He completed his neurology residency at the Brigham and Massachusetts General Hospital, and fellowship in movement disorders and ataxia at Mass General. His clinical and research interests relate to neurodegenerative movement disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, multiple system atrophy (MSA) and the cerebellar ataxias. 
Calum MacRae, MD, PhD, is the director of One Brave Idea, vice chair for Scientific Innovation in the Department of Medicine at the Brigham, a professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and an associate member at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT. He is also the principal investigator of the Apple Heart and Movement Study. 
Marc S. Sabatine, MD, MPH, is chair of the Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) Study Group, the Lewis Dexter, MD, Distinguished Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine at the Brigham, and a professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Ursula Kaiser, MD, is the chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Hypertension and the director of the Brigham Research Institute. Her translational research has involved clinical and laboratory observations in humans, investigations in mouse models and laboratory studies to elucidate the molecular and biological underpinnings of these disorders. She has had continuous National Institutes of Health funding for over 25 years and is firmly committed to mentorship. 
Jacqueline Slavik, PhD, is the executive director of the Brigham Research Institute. Slavik became a founding senior program manager at the BRI when it was launched in and later that year took on her current leadership role. Her research interests include T lymphocytes and T lymphocyte signaling and their involvement in cancer and autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
