Each month, we ask people from across the Brigham to answer a question for our “Look Who’s Talking” feature. This issue, we’re asking for those who attended Discover Brigham to share their favorite experiences and highlights from the event. If you would like to add your voice to the conversation, please submit a comment at the bottom of the page.

“I discovered a diverse collection of basic and translational research happening right here at the Brigham. Each of these lines of inquiry represents a potentially promising breakthrough for our patients. As both a clinician and a researcher, it was particularly exciting to see our collective commitment to bring new knowledge from bench to bedside. It has certainly informed my own ongoing work and opened many potential avenues of collaboration.”  — James N. Luo, MD, Resident, Department of Surgery

“Discover Brigham showed me the amazing breadth of cutting-edge research going on here. I’m so pleased that one of our trainees in the Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders, Marlen Menlyadiev, PhD, was selected for a Research Excellence Award for his work on breath metabolomics to develop biomarkers for sleep deficiency and circadian timing.”  — Jeanne Duffy, MBA, PhD, Neuroscientist, Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders, Departments of Medicine and Neurology

“At Discover Brigham, I discovered, or rediscovered, all of the excitement surrounding research. I presented a poster entitled “Ethics Consultations at a Major Academic Medical Center: A Retrospective, Longitudinal Analysis,” highlighting the findings from a recent grant for which I was PI, funded by the American Nurses Foundation. Our interdisciplinary study team included two additional Brigham Nurses, including Martha Jurchak, PhD, RN (Director of the Clinical Ethics Service), and Elizabeth Eagan-Bengston, MS, RN (Nurse Administrator). It was great to see what other Brigham researchers are working on and share our findings with the community!” — Aimee Milliken, PhD, RN, Clinical Ethicist, Office of Clinical Ethics; Nurse Scientist, Director of Research, Center for Nursing Excellence

“Discover Brigham is a really special day where researchers come together to share their work with the public and with each other. This year, I was proud to have my high school student mentee, Sarah O’Sullivan, present a poster. Sarah has spent her last two summers at the Center for Surgery and Public Health, primarily working on the Metrics for Equitable Access and care in SURgery (MEASUR) project. Discover Brigham was an excellent opportunity for Sarah to share her work as a part of the MEASUR team. Thank you, Brigham Research Institute, for hosting such a great event!”  — Elzerie de Jager, MBBS(Hons), Lead Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Center for Surgery and Public Health, Department of Surgery
