Update: The Brigham Research Institute has added a keynote speaker to Discover Brigham: Kyu Rhee, MD, MPP, vice president and chief health officer of IBM Corporation will deliver a talk on health equity and its interaction with technology to kick off the event.

Each year, Discover Brigham offers an exciting opportunity to learn about groundbreaking research, interact with cutting-edge innovation and meet the expert investigators who make it all possible. Here’s a sneak peek of the lineup for this year’s event, hosted by the Brigham Research Institute on Thursday, Nov. 7. Attendance is free and open to faculty, staff and members of the public.

Leading the Way

Brigham researchers are relentless in their efforts to transform ideas conceived at the bench into realities carried out at the bedside, and Discover Brigham is a celebration of their advancements. This year’s event will bring together thought leaders from across the Brigham in the constantly evolving fields of engineering, pain, genomics and more.

The half-day event will kick off at 11:15 a.m. with a poster session and live demonstrations in various locations throughout the hospital. From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., there will be eight 50-minute sessions, with two running at the same time at the start of each hour. These sessions will explore a wide range of research topics and will feature speakers, panelists and moderators. How has the Brigham joined the fight against the opioid epidemic? Is it true that an existing plant species has more than seven times the hemoglobin levels found in humans? Find out during the Discover Brigham sessions highlighted below:

Opioid and Pain Innovations:

In 2019 alone, over 2,000 lives have been lost in Massachusetts due to opioid overuse. Join Scott Weiner, MD, MPH, of the Department of Emergency Medicine and director of the Brigham Comprehensive Opioid Response and Education (B-CORE) Program, as he leads a discussion on how the Brigham is combatting this epidemic with long-lasting interventions and viable treatment options.

Blood from Plants:

Join Wilfred Ngwa, PhD, of the Division of Medical Physics and Biophysics in the Department of Radiation Oncology, to witness the unveiling of groundbreaking research at this session. A superspecies of plant will be revealed with the power to change not only how we treat blood disorders but also has powerful implications for the food industry concerning meat-replacement and global warming.

Live demonstrations will also take place throughout the hospital. “How to Handle a Medical Emergency on a Deep Space Mission”and “Meditation and Yoga: The Science, Research and Simple Practice” are just two of six demos at the event.

During the live demos, visitors will also be able to engage with the All of Us Research Program, a national endeavor to gather data from one million or more people — including Brigham faculty and staff. Visitors can find out how they can participate, benefit and share ideas for how to improve the research program.

“Discover Brigham is one of the biggest platforms for us to showcase the work that’s being done right here at Brigham on All of Us, and we want to share how our data browser resource can help benefit the Brigham Research community,” said Meg Bor, marketing and communication manager for the All of Us Research Program.

Discover Brigham will culminate with an emphasis on more aspirational projects that have the potential to solve vexing medical problems. At 5 p.m., the eighth annual BRIght Futures Prize winner of $100,000 will be announced during a closing awards ceremony.
