Parenting Matters: Supporting Parents of Children Ages 0-8 is a report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine that identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes and practices associated with positive outcomes in children from birth through age 8. Parenting Matters identifies universal, preventive and targeted strategies that have been effective for parents of young children and lead to healthy outcomes for children. This report makes recommendations for how to promote the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents, and serves as a roadmap for future parenting policy, research and practice.

MaryCatherine Arbour, MD, MPH, in the Division of Global Health Equity, is featured in Parenting Matters and discusses continuous quality improvement from the Home Visiting Collaborative Improvement and Innovation Network (HV CoIIN), funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration. HV CoIIN is the first, national initiative to apply continuous quality improvement methods to evidence-based home visiting programs that will improve critical outcomes for families with children ages 0 to 5. The initiative aims to improve outcomes in four targeted-areas by home visiting programs: breastfeeding, maternal depression, family engagement and child development.
