On October 7, BWHers and members of the greater Boston health care community came together to educate and inspire collaboration around innovative science, technology and medicine. The daylong event included 12 sessions that fell within two tracks representing the continuum of research and innovation at BWH. Below are some of the highlights – including selected sessions, tweets and audio clips – from the “Innovation Track.”

9 a.m. Innovation Spotlight

Kicking off the innovation track at Discover Brigham were four presenters who have been able to leverage digital health care to solve common patient issues.

CRN caught up with Benjamin Raby, MD, of the AIMSpire project, for Look Who’s Talking.

Alexander Lin, PhD, believes this technology has the potential to expedite the diagnosis of brain cancer and ultimately improve surgical outcomes.

Ann DeBord Smith, MD, MPH, a BWH General Surgery resident, then detailed a smartphone application, VISION, that can detect peripheral arterial disease (PAD).

Wrapping up the session was Mark Zhang, DO, a Palliative Care consultant at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, whose online tool, called CAKE, allows people to answer questions that shed light on their end-of-life preferences, breaking the ice for difficult conversations.

10 a.m. Venture Capital & Investments

The Wall Street Journal’s Brian Gormley moderated a panel of leading VC investors who shared insights into the latest investment trends and promising areas of funding opportunities for clinical innovators.

11 a.m. Start Up Shark Tank

Start ups Allazo Health, Meet Caregivers, Memora and Health WatchRX competed for this year’s prize: $2500 and access through meetings with BWH leadership and Brigham Innovation Hub.

1 p.m. Wearables

The Wearables panel, moderated by Boston Business Journal reporter Jessica Bartlett (@BOSBIZJess) brought together the people who make and sell wearables, physicians who are using them in their healthcare practice and healthcare executives who want to ensure that your data is safe. BWHC Chief Medical Information Officer for Health Information, Innovation & Integration Adam Landman, MD, MS, MIS, MHS, joined the panel.

2 p.m. Consumer Health
