Frolkis to Step Down October 31

Joseph P. Frolkis, MD, PhD, has decided to step down as director of Primary Care and vice chair for Primary Care in the Department of Medicine, effective Oct. 31.

Over the last six years, Frolkis has worked to re-energize, transform and grow primary care. He was instrumental in crafting and implementing a BWH-specific model of team-based primary care that has helped the organization recruit 70 new physicians. Under his leadership, three new primary care practices were opened, designed from the ground up to reflect the new, team-anchored care model. Frolkis was also one of the core architects of the “Medical Neighborhood” work to improve care coordination between primary care and specialists. He has also been a champion for BWH Primary Care in his work at the HMS Center for Primary Care.

Because of this work, the hospital is poised to both continue and increase its commitment to primary care growth. Having helped to build the foundation, Frolkis is now taking time to consider next steps in his own career. More information about transition plans and a search for his successor will be forthcoming.
